Gurja Himal expedition is known locally as the lowest Dhaulagiri peak of the Dhaulagiri range. Many mountain lovers had plans to climb this unclimbed peak from 1956 till 1969 but many climbers spent so much time searching the condition of the mountain and possible climbing routes and the peak did not see a successful ascent. Many climbers had been disappointed when the Nepal government closed the peak for expeditions from 1968 till 1979. Gurja Himal was first climbed on November 1, 1969 from the West ridge by Mr. T. Saeki, Lhakpa Tenzing, A. Lnouye, S. Kanayama, H. Sakai, K. Shimoda and Y. Yakushi.The expedition was lead by a Japanese expedition team which included Y. Yakushi. The Gurja Himal Expedition is suitable for those climbers who are willing to summit 7000m peaks in a less touristic area are and are not interested in climbing the crowded peaks like: Himlung, Ama Dablam and Baruntse. From the summit you will have great views of Dhaulagiri II, Dhaulagiri III, Dhaulagiri IV, Dhaulagiri V, Churen Himal (Main), Churen Himal (East), Churen Himal (West),Dhaulagiri VI, Putha Hiunchuli (Dh VII),Gurja Himal, False Junction Peak, Junction Peak. The peak is located at the coordinates of: 28°40′26″N longitude and 83°16′37″E latitude.

Autumn and spring are the best climbing seasons, within those seasons March, April, September and October are the best months for climbing. After arranging permits and final preparations for the expedition in Kathmandu you will be depart to Pokhara to Durbang by car. The trekking caravan route starts from Darbang and normally takes about 7 days to reach the Gurja Himal South base camp via Dharpatan, Takum, Lumsung, Gurja village, Burjung Kharka and Darsing Kharka. The base camp is located around the height of the 4600m.

Your success or failure in climbing will be determined by your front end preparations and experiences. Everest Alpine Trekking clients to have at least two successful 6000m peaks, very good knowledge of ice and rock climbing and how to ascend and descend fixed lines. You don’t need to be fast but you need to be steady and strong. Mental toughness plays a large role as does the ability to relax and let your body acclimatize.

Overview

Gurja Himal Expedition is a remote and little-explored mountain massif in Nepal. It lies south of Dhaulagiri and west of Annapurna, in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. The range includes some of the world’s highest peaks, including Gurja Peak (7,193 m) and Churen Himal (6,854 m).

The Gurja Himal region is one of the least visited areas in Nepal, due largely to its inaccessibility. The area was closed to foreigners until 2002, and even now only a handful of trekkers venture into this remote corner of the country each year.
